La Calvana: the mountain a stone’s throw from Florence

Tuscany isn’t just rolling hills marked by vineyards and cypresses! With this tour I’ll take you to discover the lesser-known side of my land. La Calvana is a mountain range of karst origins, characterized by caves, dolinas and streams. Its name comes from the fact that its summit is “bald”, without any vegetation. When we get to the highest peak, that of Monte Maggiore at 916 metres, we’ll be on green summit fields where we can easily find flocks of grazing sheep, horses living in a wild state and the “Calvanina”, a dying-out local race of cows. On clear days from up there you can see the city of Florence and make out perfectly Brunelleschi’s dome.
